In the 1961 radio interview of Frances Quintana and one of Rosa’s residents, the announcer exclaims—clearly moved by the loss the Hispanos were experiencing as Navajo Reservoir’s water flooded their homes, businesses, and church—“people should know about it, know what is going on down there, and possibly something can be done in future cases like this—make a test case out of this” (“Discussion with Members”). Whether the “down there” refers to what occurred at the Navajo Dam site or south of the border in the Colorado Delta, the stories from these terrains of struggle bear repeating in order to bring awareness to the history of slow violence by Colorado River dams that have shaped Hispano, Latina/o, and Mexican communities throughout the basin. These histories help highlight the impact of decades of dam construction along the river, both to the river itself and to the communities living alongside it. Such histories also illuminate the ways in which wilderness narratives perpetuate the erasure of the Hispano, Latina/o, and Mexican voices in the watershed, particularly as such places like Glen Canyon continue to draw attention for the losses there. Finally, as these tributary voices tell their own stories of loss, belonging, hard work, and hope expressed in the goodlife and querencia, the discourses upon which we might draw today to ameliorate the attitudes and actions of the past emerge as voices from the deep. Largely invisible to those north of the border, these stories rise to inspire new generations to speak up and take their rightful place in Colorado River governance.
